New research suggests that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People using such drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts stress that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
