This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard biological terror, but within Together lies a profound examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when the couple move from the big city to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He dreads the notion of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on today.
